Coach Judd Wilson, the defensive line coach for Newcastle High School, brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to excellence to his role. Reflecting on last season, Wilson expressed pride in his players’ adaptability and hard work. “The kids did a great job adjusting to a new defense. They worked hard and accepted the change.” He attributed the team’s successful 9-3 record to their defensive toughness and understanding of individual responsibilities: “Defensively, we were tough. Kids were flying to the football and understood their individual responsibilities.”

Looking ahead to this season, Wilson has made strategic adjustments to the defensive line. “After graduating 14 seniors, we needed to move some kids around to different positions to improve team depth. This summer, we’ve really worked to improve team speed and strength, and a big focus has been encouraging competitiveness and teaching kids to earn reps.” Improvement in communication has also been a priority: “They’re learning to talk to each other and hold each other accountable while cheering each other on.”

Player development is a cornerstone of Wilson’s coaching approach, with the weight room playing a vital role. “The weight room has been vital in each player’s development: high attendance equals high development across the board.” He highlighted several players who have shown significant improvement, including Blake Allen, Eyan Barker, Thomas Barbie, and TJ Bradford, each making strides in their performance and understanding of the game.

Wilson is optimistic about the defensive line’s strengths this year, citing experience and leadership. “We are returning with a lot of experience on the defensive line, which contributes to their understanding of their responsibilities. We have Taj Smith, a four-year starter, leading the defense. We also have depth in Cody Nix and Jace Ledoux.”

Wilson’s coaching philosophy centers on being “violent, fast, and physical,” with a relentless mental attitude. 

In addition to his professional dedication, Wilson values family support, thanking his wife Dee and children for being his biggest supporters. “I am excited that I’ll have my son, Jason, coaching with me this year as our tight ends coach.” Now, in his 12th season coaching at Newcastle High School and his 8th as the middle school head coach, Wilson continues to inspire and lead with passion and dedication.
