NEWCASTLE RACERS
Coach: JEFF BRICKMAN
7-4
OFFENSE
The Racers ended last season in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs, but head coach Jeff Brickman thinks his team has what it takes to make a deeper run this season. “We only graduated five seniors from our playoff team last season,” he said. “We have a lot of experience returning as well as a freshmen class that never lost a game in middle school.” Leading the offense at quarterback will be Jackson Bergt (6-3, 205, Sr.). Joining him in the backfield is running back Carson Bolser (6-0, 190, Sr.), who will work to find the open running lanes and get to the open field. The offensive line is going to be an important part of keeping Bergt from getting hit. Left tackle Chad Craft (6-4, 260, Sr.) and right guard Charles Gentry (6-0, 260, Sr.) will be the anchors of the line. Serving as targets on the outside for Bergt to get the ball to, will be wide receivers Aden Shumard (6-0, 175, Sr.) and Rex Heskew (6-0, 180, Jr.).
DEFENSE
Wreaking havoc on opposing offenses will be defensive tackle Taj Smith (5-11, 250, Jr.). He is a solid athlete and a great teammate. Linebackers Shane Lovejoy (6-0, 175, Sr.) and Brady Rice (5-9, 200, Sr.) will work together to keep the offense from advancing the ball. There is a trio of defenders that will be keeping things on lockdown in the secondary. Safety Trey Burchett (5-10, 185, Jr.), strong safety T.J. Bradford (5-10, 180, So.), and free safety Jackson Shanuel (6-5, 220, Jr.) have worked hard in the offseason and are ready to show what they can do. Assistant coaches for the Racers this season are J.T. Ketch, Bo Bradshaw, Tyler Engelking, Quentin Blue, Ricky Bradford, and Josh Heskew.
