VYPE: Ashton, what positions are you playing for the Racers this season?
Ashton Shumard: I play free safety on defense, and I play wide receiver on offense.
VYPE: What’s been your favorite moment so far this season?
AS: My favorite moment of the season has got to be our nose guard Brayden Cantrell’s interception in week 0 versus Bartlesville. As soon as he picked it off, I saw coach Bradford high stepping on the field and that had me dying laughing.
VYPE: What’s your favorite thing about this team?
AS: My favorite thing about the team is definitely our bond we have with each other- it’s a brotherhood for sure.
VYPE: Which teammate is the most vocal and who keeps everyone laughing?
AS: The teammate that I would say is most vocal is Garret Pratt. He’s got tons of energy and gets everyone fired up. The guy that keeps everyone laughing I’d say has to be Kaden Longman. He is the funniest guy that I know.
VYPE: Who inspires you?
AS: Someone who definitely inspires me has to be my brother, Alec. His work ethic is unmatched and from him working hard it drives me to work harder because it’s competition.
VYPE: What’s been the biggest surprise this season?
AS: The biggest surprise this season has to be me not playing QB this year. Ever since the end of last year I’ve been grinding to play QB, with training and devotion in the weight room. Then Blake moved in, and they wanted him at QB, and he’s been killing it. I’ve got full faith he’s going to lead us to a state championship.
VYPE: What are the strengths of your game and what have you improved on the most this year?
AS: I’d say my strength in my game is the love I have for football. Through it motivates me to go hard at all times and to make plays. No matter what it takes I want to win.
VYPE: What’s your favorite subject in school and who is your favorite teacher?
AS: My favorite subject in school is physics. It’s very interesting and the teacher is a genius.
VYPE: What other activities are you involved in at NHS?
AS: I play tennis here at Newcastle. My freshman year was my first year ever playing and it was a super cool experience I had tons of fun.
VYPE: How do you enjoy spending your free time?
AS: Something I love to do in my free time is to read my Bible and study the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. I truly believe he is everything he says he is.
